Many are confused about whether rose water is rose hydrosol.
They are not, they are different!
Rose Hydrosol is produced from painstaking distillation of rose petals. During the distillation and extraction process, oil and water are separated. Owing to the difference in density, rose essential oil is formed on the upper layer, while condensed water would sit at the bottom layer, a substance known as pure dew. Pure dew, therefore, is an essential oil after distillation, a by-product of the process. In addition to a small amount of essential oils, the pure lotion also contains all the water-soluble substances such as tannins and flavonoids.
Separately, rose floral water is made by combining rose essential oil with other additives, spices or water. Many floral waters onthe market are not true pure water. The easiest way to judge whether the product is 100% rose water is to look at the ingredient list, whether there is only ONE ingredient!
Many small distillation companies now choose to distill single essential oils or hydrosols and decide which final product they need before starting the distillation.
